The Backyard Est 2016
About This Spot
Arriving at The Backyard Est 2016 feels like stepping into a gentle pause from the everyday rhythm of Newport. Nestled on a quiet street, this café invites you with the soft murmur of friendly chatter and the casual clinking of coffee cups. The pace here is unhurried, a place where mornings unfold slowly and shared moments bloom naturally, especially for families and those seeking a welcoming neighborhood nook.
The heart of the experience is undoubtedly the spacious backyard that lives up to the café’s name—transforming a typical café visit into an outing for all ages. Children’s laughter and the playful rumble of ride-on toys mingle with the aroma of rich coffee and freshly baked banana bread. This outdoor space feels personal and alive, offering a sense of home away from home where toddlers can freely explore while parents savor a well-made almond mocha or a perfectly balanced flat white.
The menu complements this warmth with familiar yet thoughtfully curated dishes that invite you to linger. Whether it’s the comforting softness of maple pulled pork accompanied by a hint of green apple, or the vibrant freshness of smashed avocado paired with eggs done just right, each bite feels like a quiet celebration of honest flavors. The kitchen’s care shows in the little details—from the creamy richness of an almond mocha to the tempting slice of pistachio coconut, encouraging slow, contented enjoyment rather than hurried consumption.
What truly sets this place apart is its approachable and genuine vibe. There’s no rush, no pretense—just a comfortable space where the easy flow of conversation and shared smiles create a subtle, unspoken connection among visitors. The staff echoes this warmth, attentive and welcoming without ever feeling intrusive, letting the atmosphere unfold naturally like a well-loved backyard gathering.
For locals and visitors alike, The Backyard Est 2016 isn’t simply about filling a plate or grabbing a coffee. I ordered the Maple Pulled Pork and Red Hot Chili Prawns. The pulled pork is the best stewed pork for me the texture is soft, and it comes with green apple. It was so tasty. The Red Hot Chili Prawns are scrambled eggs mixed with prawns, topped with crispy fish, and served with chili in olive oil. They are also very tasty. The coffee is strong and smooth, and the service is very nice. I want to come back to try another menu next week.

So happy i came here today with my 2.5 year old & newborn. I saw it in mamma knows west & after visiting the Newport lakes park we came here to burn off more energy & get lunch and I can safely say I will be returning. I saw there was a play area and expected a cubby house and a couple of toys but as we walked through to the back yard I was amazed at the amount of toys, trucks, ride ons etc available for my son to play with! He was in absolute heaven which meant I could feed my newborn and enjoy lunch & coffee whilst he played. The menu is plentiful with lots of choices and really good prices. The service was friendly. A new favourite in the west as a mother for sure! Thank you

Wonderful family friendly cafe with a spacious backyard area for toddlers to run around. Both customer service and food/coffee was great. Though, it was hard to decide what to eat because nothing really stood out on their menu besides the pulled pork, for me anyway. And I didn’t enjoy the coke float with soft serve - would be much better if it was made with real ice cream. In saying that, highly recommend The Backyard to anyone with young kids and want to absorb a bit of vitamin D!!

Highly recommend to anyone who looking for a wonderful breakfast and brunch experience in Melbourne. The recent coffee that I had is to my liking. I was impressed by its great qualities. And the food was pretty tasty, bacon was cooked perfectly and sandwich that I ordered was delicious with reasonable price. Very welcoming and friendly staff, the service was fast, great environment and convenient location just by the road, near Newport station so really easy to be reached. The backyard behind the cafe was spacious for kids. Everything was so excellent that words can't describe. I will definitely be going back!

Visited over the weekend with my family of four for brunch. Parking was easy out the front, although I will mention it was 1 hour timed, so just be careful of that! We sat out the back in the courtyard with all the kids toys so our little ones could have a run around and enjoy the space. Service was quick to order our drinks, but we had to go back in and ask if we could order food as no one came out after that to help us and we had two hungry monsters ready to go. Food took approximately 15 minutes to come out from ordering. Drinks were on point. The kids toasties were good. Breakfast dishes were also yum. I will just note - if you choose to sit out the back, beware of the seagulls, as they will swoop in and try to take your food the second you are off guard.

What a lovely cafe. I went for a haircut close by and decided to give this cafe a whirl. It was lovely. Especially the food. I had a maple pulled pork. So amazing. A very big serve and it was Devine. So good. The coffee was fantastic too. Service was okay. Nothing outgoing nor charming. But that’s okay. I enjoy a chat with the waitress. Ah well. Can’t get everything. But food and coffee. Top!
